Christine Lindsey, Chair, Wallington Community Wellbeing Group
“I have been a member of the Patient Participation Group at my GP practice for the past five years and Chair of the Wallington Community Wellbeing Group (WCWG). The group was formed four years ago to target loneliness and isolation in our borough.
“Our group works with GP staff and healthcare workers to help provide information about and access to activities that help people keep active, meet other people and support each other. We hold two events each year with exhibitors including NHS Healthcare and charities, where older people gain information, help and advice.
“Since collaborating with the NHS and local GPs, we are seeing more people becoming active. If this approach was taken nationwide, it would take pressure off the NHS.
“The voluntary work I do is very rewarding. We are making a positive difference to people’s lives. Our recent event in April this year had 36 exhibitors and more than 300 visitors. Seeing the healthcare workers and charities helping the visitors with their problems has a great ‘feel-good’ factor. One lady had had problems with her hearing aid for months – only for the audiologist to find she had it in the wrong ear!”
