Cancer in the Community – Community Nursing Module

The Macmillan Primary Care Nursing team, in conjunction with Central London Community Healthcare (CLCH), designed, ran and evaluated a 3-day face to face module for community nurses entitled ‘Cancer in the Community’ with an additional day in practice and some online pre-learning. The main findings from the group were:
    1.  Lack of information is a barrier to providing good care
    2.  Knowledge improves confidence to support a patient holistically
    3.  Community nurses feel that education on cancer as a long-term condition is relevant to their work
    4. Attending the module has inspired changes to practice
This successful pilot is now being embedded within CLCH’s mandatory training for their staff; and the project team are working with HEE and CLCH to look at opportunities for the course to be available to community nurses across London in each STP area. Read the ‘Cancer in the community  – an introduction to cancer as a long-term condition for Community Nurses‘ report.
