Join our new cancer psychological services working group!

Have you been affected by cancer and used psychological support services?

Do you live in South West London?

If yes to the above, please read on:

Psychological distress can be an ongoing problem for people who have been diagnosed with cancer. People who are living with cancer can be affected emotionally from the time that they are diagnosed, during their treatment and most commonly in the first year after diagnosis and many feel that they need additional support during this time.

We know that 58% of people diagnosed with cancer feel that their emotional needs are not looked after as much as their physical needs (Macmillan, 2006).

We want to improve the quality of life for those affected by cancer and treat individuals with a “whole person approach” looking after both physical and mental health equally.

How do we want to make things better for patients diagnosed with cancer across south west London?

To help us do this, we will be setting up a “Cancer Psychological Services Working Group” which will meet once a month for an hour at our offices in Wimbledon. Attendees will include a mix of health and care professionals and patient and public voices.

No-one has a greater understanding of services than the people who use them. We would like to recruit two patient representatives who have been affected by cancer and have used mental health services during and/or after treatment to share their experiences and thoughts on our plans.
